Episode 64: ‘Like an Open Book’ – An Archaeology Tour in the Scottish Borders

Come with me on an archaeology tour to Scotland’s south to uncover layers of history, solve mysteries from the past and learn from true experts in the field.

‘Like an Open Book’ is a story about an archaeology tour to the Scottish Borders with HARP Archaeology. Your guides are professional archaeologists Michelle Gamble and Ian Hill, joined by a group of experts in Roman history, medieval battles, family research and more. We travel to Kelso and Melrose, uncover the secrets of Roxburgh and Hume Castle, walk in the footsteps of medieval mercenaries and dig for Roman treasures.

Along the way, Michelle and Ian teach us how to look at Scottish landscapes through an archaeologist’s lens. We learn about different archaeological methods and how other experts – from family history researchers to hobby metal detectorists – help to paint a more colourful picture of the past.

Thanks to Michelle & Ian, but also all the other experts who share their knowledge with us – Samira Hill, Rob Longworth from Trimontium Museum and their volunteer detectorists, Geoff Parkhouse, all the volunteers at the Borders Family History Society – and of course the other participants on the tour, Kelly, Sarah and Kat, who graciously helped me shelter my microphone from the wind.
