Episode 95: Shetland Archaeology & Crofting with Chris Dyer

Join me for a conversation with Shetland-based archaeologist and crofter Chris Dyer from Garths Croft in Bressay.

Chris Dyer is a professional archaeologist, military historian, crofter, drystone mason, retained firefighter and manager at Shetland Livestock Marketing Group. He lives at Garths Croft on the island of Bressay, one of the Shetland Islands. There he keeps a flock of native Shetland sheep focusing on fibre, colour and traditional markings and offers bespoke croft and island heritage tours throughout Shetland.

Back in June 2025, Chris joined the Wild for Scotland Social Club Session to share his story and insights from the island. This is the recording from this exclusive sessions for my Patreon members, which happen 4x a year. Love the idea of joining conversations like this live? Join the Social Club now!

Chris and I chat about Shetland’s fascinating history, his experience with breeding native sheep breeds in the islands, his work as an archaeologist and our shared passion for wool.
